The original name for Waldorf was Beantown and in 1880 the General Assembly of Maryland decided to change its name to Waldorf to honor William Waldorf Astor. He is the great-grandson of John Jacob Astor. The community was once a tobacco market and it then came to be a place of slot machines back in 1949.
